Overview

Engineering of the Aflaj of Oman
Abdullah Al-Ghafri, PhD
Associate Professor and Director of the Aflaj Research Unit, The University of Nizwa
Aflaj of Oman dated back to the Bronze age. It was constructed in Oman in several times through history. These irrigation systems can be classified to several types according to the type of water source. Several methods developed to convey the water from the source to the water-demand-area. This presentation will high light on the engineering aspects of the Aflaj of Oman with some examples of structures and projects that includes; storage devices, water conveying devices, water distribution, post-harvest technology, and land preparation.

Speaker’s Biography
Dr. Abdullah Al-Ghafri has been working as an Associate Professor and Director of the Aflaj Research Unit at the University of Nizwa. He has completed his PhD in Environmental Resources majoring in Agricultural Water Management from Hokkaido University Japan. He has published   98 scientific papers, abstracts and articles. He has been actively involved in community services and has also has received awards from a number of organisations.
